Back below freezing and snow on the ground. A sunny but chilly 8º this afternoon. Today’s panorama is the last shot in this series. It’s been interesting and harder than expected to get out to do a photo each week. Happy New Year!
December 22, 2014 9:41AM
Once again, raining and a cold 36º.
December 15, 2014 11:34AM
Rainy and 44º today. Yuck.
December 8, 2014 3:02PM
Much warmer today at 27º, but a stiff breeze and dampness made it feel much colder.
December 1, 2014 1:26PM
Hard to believe that I’m in the last month of this project. They year has been a total blur of activity! Today it was 7º, slight breeze, cold.
November 24, 2014 3:22PM
Snowing again today, and about 18º.
November 17, 2014 8:245AM
A cold 6º out there today, but sunny and gorgeous this morning.
November 10, 2014 2:25PM
Big change from last week. Major snowstorm was predicted, we got just enough to transform the landscape into winter. 29º with wet snow on top of not-yet-frozen ground.
November 3, 2014 5:04PM
Temps in the 50º’s today, my timing thrown completely off by Daylight Savings. It’s now nearly dark at this time and the leaves are all nearly gone. Very dramatic transition.
October 27, 2014 4:58PM
Didn’t note a temp – just that it was brisk out.
October 20, 2014 5:03PM
Temps in the 60º’s today, sunny and really pretty. Fall colors are about at their peak right now.
October 13, 2014 4:46PM
High 50º’s today, cool with drizzle which was perfect to show of the fall colors.
October 6, 2014 4:59PM
About 60º again but feeling warmer. Just a touch of color change in the leaves.
September 29, 2014 4:54PM
60º – cool but very nice out today

72º, very light breeze. The dead branch in the trees to the right has finally fallen.
June 2, 2014 5:37PM
Today was warm and in the 80’s. Actually felt hot.
May 26, 2014 2:00PM
52º, with a SE wind of 20mph.
May 19, 2014 4:28PM
I was out of town a number of Monday’s lately. Missed the first of the leaves coming out which is too bad. Still looks pretty dramatic between the previous and this shot. Temperature was in the 60’s today…
April 21, 2014 5:27PM
April 14, 2014 8:37PM
33º, NW wind 18 mph.
April 7, 2014 6:30PM
The snow from the snow storm last week is completely gone, and now our snow cover is almost fully melted as well. 60 degrees today and downright pleasant.
March 31, 2014 2:18PM
Big changes from last week. Lots of exposed ground which is great to see after the long winter.
March 24, 2014 10:20AM
Late March and it was snowing again today. I missed the giant slow-falling flakes but you can see the new coverage on the trees and spots on the ground that would otherwise be snow-free. 23º with a South wind at 5MPH.
March 17, 2014 5:50PM
Somehow I was surprised by the fact that Mississippi River has completely thawed. I haven’t been by the river much since last week and it was great to see this ribbon of dark water through the trees and snow. 34ºF with a 12MPH SE wind blowing straight up the hill to where I stand every week.
March 10, 2014 1:37PM
Absolutely gorgeous spring day. A very warm 53ºF with a light NW breeze. The snow was melting like crazy and there are a few patches without snow on the hillside here. With a few more warm days and no more snow the exposed slopes should start to melt quickly. Can’t wait to see what it looks like here next week – big changes?
March 3, 2014
Big surprise…another overcast Monday for my overlook photograph. Today: cloudy, 9ºF, light SE wind.
February 24, 2014
Today was another one of those days that started out with gorgeous bluebird skies and bright white snow. Wasn’t in the cards to get to the river until late and I wasn’t sure what to expect with it having completed clouded over. Much prettier than I hoped for! About 12ºF with a cold west wind.
February 17, 2014 9:54AM
Snowy morning, though not as much as predicted. Still really nice to have the fresh layer of white covering everything. A warm 23ºF with a light SSW.
February 10, 2014 11:51AM
Gorgeous sunny day with almost no wind. Still a cold 0ºF, but feels noticeably warmer in the sun.
February 3, 2014 4:40PM
I missed the sunny morning and the afternoon was overcast and gray. A cool 15ºF with a NW wind at 8mph making it feel chillier than it was. Blah.
January 27, 2014 4:05PM
It was a sunny and brisk -6ºF with a light West wind. Nice to have the blue skies after days of grey and blowing snow.
January 20, 2014 3:02PM
Today felt colder than the first day. At 10ºF with a 15mph North wind it felt particularly bitter. Fully overcast and flat light but still a touch of light on the trees to bring out their color.
January 13, 2014 10:52AM
Sunny and much warmer, a balmy 29ºF with a light west wind at 12mph.
January 6, 2014 8:16AM
Exceptional conditions for the first shot of the year. Pretty sunrise with the outside temperature at -26 degrees F. Cold and crunchy snow with a light breeze.
About this photo project:
I won the lottery. Sort of. I was selected by lottery to be one of 7 regular photographers for an unpaid community photo-a-day project for the greater Longfellow neighborhood in Minneapolis. For 2014 each of the regular photographers is assigned a day of the week (I’m Monday) and submits one image to be posted on the Longfellow 365 website (www.longfellow365.com).
As a side project I’m also photographing a panorama of the same spot along the Mississippi River every Monday. This spot is a favorite spot of ours, and one I’ve photographed on a number of occasions in the past. It symbolizes what is so great about the Mississippi River gorge in Minneapolis: gorgeous, accessible, undeveloped space in the heart of a major metropolitan area.
Hard telling how this will shake out and I have many unanswered questions having never done a project like this before. Will there be noticeable differences each time I’m there or will it start to look the same week after week? Will I lose my mind trying to reasonably stitch a nearly 180º panorama of a scene full of trees and other detail? Can I make it there every week? Lots of good questions and I’m excited to see how this unfolds.
