In early June I had the chance to paddle through the northern part of the Pagami Creek fire, which raged through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area last September. Seeing the fire damage evoked a range of emotions as the burn is both stunning and saddening in its stark beauty. The landscape and topography are revealed as the fire peeled back the vegetation leaving rocks and tree skeletons behind. The ability of the vegetation to begin to recover was uplifting. I especially liked the electric green of the first wave of plants re-colonizing the burned landscape. There were gorgeous blooming flowers I haven’t seen in years and tree suckers growing from the base of charred trees. It will be interesting to see how the area continues to change in the coming years.
